This simple oxidant- and base-free protocol was achieved under mild conditions in an atom-economic process from o-phenylenediamines and benzyl alcs., affording the desired products in moderate to excellent yields. Notably, the ”on water” protocol was essential for achieving this synthetic method in this catalytic system.

By changing the ligand to dcypt (3,4-bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)thiophene), enol derivatives could also be employed as coupling partners achieving the C-H alkenylation of imidazoles as well as thiazoles and oxazoles. Thus, a range of C2-arylated and alkenylated azoles can be synthesized using this newly developed nickel-based catalytic system. The key to the success of the C-H coupling of imidazoles is the use of a tertiary alc. as solvent. This also allows the use of an air-stable nickel(II) salt as the catalyst precursor.

The newly reported HfCl4/C catalyst not only mediated fast and clean formation of benzimidazoles but also could be easily removed from the reaction solution and reused up to eight times. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and thermal desorption studies showed that activated carbon could reversibly adsorb and release Hf(IV) in ethanol upon cooling and heating, thereby serving as a thermal-controlled solid support.

A.C. voltammetry studies of the complexes indicates reversible oxidation and reduction potentials. Calculated excited state oxidation potentials for 13 are neg. enough to efficiently inject electrons into the conduction band of TiO2 (EF â‰?-0.5 V). Thus, from the electrochem. point of view, all the complexes, especially 3, are good candidates for operation in DSSC as dyes.

A series of mixed-ligand cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes with 2-aryl-1-phenylbenzimidazoles (where aryl is Ph, 4-chlorophenyl, 4-(N,N-dimethylamino)phenyl, 3,4-dimethoxyphenyl, 2-thienyl, and 11-carboxydipyrido[3,2-a:2′,3′-c]phenazine) have been synthesized and characterized by 1H NMR and 31P NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The electron absorption spectra (EASs) of the complexes are observed to contain charge-transfer bands in the low-energy region (below 600 nm, ε â‰?(1-3) × 103 mol/(L cm)). The bands experience appreciable bathochromic shifts as the electron-donating properties of a benzimidazole ligand strengthen. The complexes manifest luminescence in the yellow-red spectral region. According to a.c. voltammetry data, reversible and quasi-reversible redox transitions (Eox â‰?1.2-1.7 V with respect to SHE, CH3CN) are observed in solutions of the studied complexes.
