Ionic liquids (ILs) have attracted significant attention from researchers in various fields as a result of their unique properties. As new and important applications are identified for these materials, there is also a drive to develop methods for accessing a wider range of ILs. However, despite this demand, only a few techniques have so far been reported and, more importantly, general but efficient processes for IL synthesis were lacking. Thus, it would be beneficial to devise a cost-effective, environmentally friendly means of producing a wide variety of pure ILs. The present work demonstrates a general purpose electrodialysis approach to the formation of highly pure ILs, based on the formation of nine different ILs from various combinations of cations and anions. In each case, the IL was obtained with a purity of >99%. This method offers the advantages of avoiding the use of hazardous organic solvents and eliminating tedious and costly purification processes. Unlike conventional methods, this membrane-based technol. also prevents the generation of side products. Mixed ILs have many potential applications, and the present technique readily generates various mixed ILs based on a simple adjustment of the applied current.

The mechanism of aluminum electrodeposition from acidic 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride chloroaluminate ionic liquids ([BMIm]Cl ILs) is studied over a wide range of the molar ratio of AlCl3 to [BMIm]Cl (N) at 30°C. The findings for AlCl3-[BMIm]Cl and AlCl3-1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([EMIm]Cl) are analyzed and compared in order to identify dependences common for 1,3-dialkylimidazolium chloride ILs. Limiting currents were detected on the cathodic polarization curves at the aluminum | ionic liquid interface. Limiting currents are caused by the Al2Cl7 anions diffusion to the electrode surface. The limiting c.d. values for AlCl3-[BMIm]Cl are lower (ilim, 1.1 ≤ N leq 2.0 = 1.17 – 12.36 mA•cm-2) than for AlCl3-[EMIm]Cl (ilim, 1.1 ≤ N leq 2.0 = 1.81 – 25.37 mA·cm-2). It is shown that anion AlCl-4 can be reduced to metallic aluminum at cathodic overpotentials above 1.5 V. The diffusion coefficient of Al2Cl-7 in AlCl3-[BMIm]Cl (7.4•10-7 cm2•s-1) is lower than in AlCl3-[EMIm]Cl (9.3•10-7 cm2•s-1) and is unaffected by aluminum chloride concentration in either system.

Ionic liquids (ILs) have been extensively proposed as efficient catalysts to promote CO2 cycloaddition reaction to epoxides for producing cyclic carbonates. Recently, liquid-liquid extraction with water as an enhancer approach to regenerate ILs and to purify the product was proposed, since it reduces energy consumption and enhances the neat catalytic activity of the IL due to hydroxyl groups of water. In this work, a comprehensive sample of homogeneous IL catalysts proposed in the literature is exptl. evaluated both in the catalytic step and in its separation by liquid-liquid extraction with water, to demonstrate the universality of the proposed reaction-separation proposal for hydrophilic ILs. Then the complete processes for CO2 conversion to propylene carbonate were modelled using Aspen Plus to compare the catalyst/product separation efficiency and the specific energy consumption using liquid-liquid extraction and distillation-based platforms. The energy consumption is significantly lower using liquid-liquid platform (1.1-1.3 kWh/kgPC) than distillation one (2.4-3.1 kWh/kgPC). It is concluded that hydrophilic ionic liquids, as those formed by [EtOHmim] cation and halide anions, are promising catalysts since they allow: (i) reducing the process energy consumption due to their high catalytic activity and (ii) full catalyst recovering, even at high catalyst loadings, by improving the water extractive properties for IL separation from PC.

The object of this work focuses, on the one hand, on the development of the Wilson model for electrolytes, temperature-dependent parameters, and, on the other, tests the model and its accuracy in the prediction of ternary VLE data from few exptl. data points. The exptl. data reported in the literature are used to determine the model parameters proposed in this work for the ethanol-water binary system. The obtained interaction parameters are then used for the correlation and prediction of VLE data for five ternary systems composed of ethanol, water and different ionic liquids with different percentages at atm. pressure (101.32 kPa). We have made the prediction of ternary VLE data, ionic liquid-containing ternary systems, from temperature-dependent binary interaction parameters, adjusted by using some ternary VLE data coupled with binary VLE data. The obtained results are in good agreement with the data reported in the literature.

The aim of this study was to realize gold leaching from copper anode slime (CAS) with ionic liquid treatment. A novel medium, 1-Bu -3-methyl-imidazolium chloride (BmimCl), was used as the leaching reagent. The effects of ionic liquid concentration, temperature, time ,and solid/liquid ratio (S/L) on the leaching efficiency were investigated by Taguchi optimization and ANOVA methods. The results showed that 61.20% of gold leaching efficiency was achieved from CAS, under the optimum leaching conditions which were determined as %80 ionic liquid concentration, 50°C temperature, 1 h time and 1/20 g/mL solid/liquid ratio. The statistical results of the experiments revealed that the effects of each parameter on the gold leaching with BmimCl were in the following order: temperature > time > solid/liquid ratio > ionic liquid concentration

In this work, a nonlinear model that integrates the group contribution (GC) method with a well-known machine learning algorithm, i.e., artificial neural network (ANN), is proposed to predict the viscosity of ionic liquid (IL)-water mixtures After a critical assessment of all data points collected from literature, a dataset covering 8,523 viscosity data points of IL-H2O mixtures at different temperature (272.10 K-373.15 K) is selected and then applied to evaluate the proposed ANN-GC model. The results show that this ANN-GC model with 4 or 5 neurons in the hidden layer is capable to provide reliable predictions on the viscosities of IL-H2O mixtures With 4 neurons in the hidden layer, the ANN-GC model gives a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.0091 and squared correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.9962 for the 6,586 training data points, and for the 1,937 test data points they are 0.0095 and 0.9952, resp. When this nonlinear model has 5 neurons in the hidden layer, it gives a MAE of 0.0098 and R2 of 0.9958 for the training dataset, and for the test dataset they are 0.0092 and 0.9990, resp. In addition, comparisons show that the nonlinear ANN-GC model proposed in this work has much better prediction performance on the viscosity of IL-H2O mixtures than that of the linear mixed model.
