The organic layer were combined, washed by brine, dried by Na2SO4 and evaporated. The crude product was purified by silica flash column to afford compound 2 as white solid(1.5 g, 59percent yield).

A 30percent aqueous sodium hydroxide solution was added dropwise to adjust the pH to 8. After partitioning, the aqueous layer was extracted with ethyl acetate (300 ml * 2). The organic layer was combined, and the mixture was washed successively with saturated aqueous sodium hydrogencarbonate and saturated brine, and concentrated under reduced pressure. The concentration residue was broken up with isopropyl ether (300 ml). The crystals were collected by filtration and washed with isopropyl ether. The crystals were dried in vacuo (40°C) to give 1-(1H-imidazol-4-yl)-2-methyl-1-propanone (51.9 g, yield 82percent). 1H-NMR (CDCl3): delta1.25(6H, d, J=6.9Hz), 3.36(1H, quint, J=6.9Hz), 7.81(1H, s), 7.87(1H, s)

The organic layers were combined, washed with water and brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered, and evaporated in vacuo to provide the crude product which was purified by column chromatography (SiO2) eluting with a gradient of heptanes to 100% ethyl acetate to provide the title product as a white solid (79 mg, 9.7% yield). 1 H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) delta H NMR (300 MHz, (m, 1H), 8.79-8.57 (m, 1H), 8.50-8.23 (m, 1H), 8.02-7.83 (m, 2H), 7.84-7.72 (m, 1H), 5.56 (s, 2H).
