The organic material was extracted with ethyl ether, washed with 10% aqueous NaS2 O3, brine, dried (MgSO4) and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by flash chromatography on silica gel (hexanes/ethyl acetate=3:2) to give the title compound as a light yellow oil (639 mg, 37%) and the corresponding 2-iodoimidazole as a light yellow solid (245 mg, 14%).
