The decomposition of Ag-NHC with a saturated backbone led to ring-opening product, while the Ag-NHC with an unsaturated backbone led to imidazolium and Ag-bisNHC complex. The effects of steric property, hydrophilicity, and binding energy of NHC to O2 and H2O on the decomposition of Cu(I)-NHC were studied using theor. calculations Steric hindrance played an important role on the stability of Cu(I)-NHC. Pathways for the decomposition of Cu(I)-NHC and Ag-NHC were proposed.

These mild conditions provided moderate to very good yields for 15 examples (53-93%), while low yields were obtained with sterically hindered substrates (3 examples). The reaction was found to go through an in situ generated copper-N-heterocyclic carbene, which was then oxidized into cyclic urea derivatives possessing alkyl, benzyl, aryl, hydroxy, Boc-protected, and tertiary amine groups.

The Mizoroki-Heck (MH) reaction involving aryl halides with various acrylates and acrylamide was studied using air and moisture-stable imidazolium-based palladate pre-catalysts for the synthesis of internal alkenes RHC=CH(R1)(C(O)R2) [R = Ph, 4-MeC6H4, 4-MeOC6H4, etc.; R1 = H, Me, 4-MeOC6H4CH2, etc.; R2 = OMe, On-Bu, NH2, etc.]. These pre-catalysts were converted into Pd-NHC species (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) under catalytic conditions and were capable of facilitating the Mizoroki-Heck reaction of aryl halides with various acrylates. The effects of solvent, catalyst loading, temperature and bases on the reaction outcome were investigated. Various coupling partners were tolerated under the optimal reaction conditions catalyzed by palladate [SIPr·H][Pd(η3-2-Me-allyl)Cl2]. The efficiency of the optimized synthetic methodol. was tested on various aryl halides and substituted acrylates as well as acrylamides. The MH reaction yielded the coupled products in good to excellent isolated yields (up to 98%).

The key steps involve (a) a dirhodium(II)-catalyzed oxonium ylide formation-[2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement, (b) an N-heterocyclic carbene-catalyzed ring-expansion lactonization of tetrahydrofurfural, or (c) an oxidative cleavage of tetrahydrofuran-5-methanol to γ-lactone using a 2-iodobenzamide catalyst. This route would provide high flexibility for analog synthesis because the long side chain can be introduced at a later stage in the synthesis.
