Ophidine is an anserine-like compound from cobra muscle. Kendo (C.A. 45, 3438c) reported that it is β-alanyl-2-methylhistidine. To confirm this structure, 2-methyl-4(5)-hydroxymethylimidazole (I), m. 114°, was synthesized from NH4OH, fructose, and AcH. I was converted to the chloromethyl compound (II), m. 125°.
