Aerobic oxidative C-H functionalization of primary amines has been accomplished with a biomimetic cooperative catalytic system to furnish 1,2-disubstituted benzimidazoles I [R1 = Me, C6H5, 4-ClC6H4; R2 = cyclopropyl, n-pentyl, Ph, etc.] under ambient air. This one-pot protocol has many advantages like mild reaction conditions, low catalyst loading, atom-economical process, simple work-up and convenient strategy to functionalize non-activated primary amines also.
