Bromination of imidazole in HOAc containing NaOAc gives 2,4,5-tribromoimidazole (I) in a good yield. 4(5)-(2-Chloroethyl)imidazole, imidazole-4(5)-carboxaldehyde, and 4(5)-hydroxymethylimidazole were similarly brominated. Debromination of I with Na2SO3 or BuLi gives 4(5)-bromoimidazole. A simple synthesis of 4(5)-(2-bromoethyl)imidazole is described.
