Different bases can be used and DBU (1,8-Diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene) were found to give the best result. The product of the wittig reaction is the alkene compound 3, which is conveniently isolated in high yield and purity by precipitation from aqueous ethanol and can be used directly without further purification in the next step.
