Into a 100-mL round- bottom flask, was placed a solution of 2-cyclopropyl-lH-imidazole (compound 44.1, 1.8 g, 16.6 mmol) in sodium hydroxide (2 M, 40 mL). A solution of iodine (8.5 g, 33.5 mmol) in dichloromethane (40 mL) was added drop-wise and the resulting mixture was stirred overnight at room temperature. The aqueous layer was separated and neutralized with acetic acid and quenched by the addition of a2S203 (sat. aq.). The solids were collected by filtration to yield 3.8 g (63%) of the title compound as a brown solid.
